Hi everyone, Thanks to all of you who wrote or called offering tips and assistance.
We managed to get it solved last night. I'm not exactly sure why it broke to begin with and I'm not exactly sure why swapping drive connections around solved it, but the optical drives were on the primary IDE controller and swapping them onto the other one and putting the XP drive on the primary seems to have at least removed the uncertainty about which drive was HD0 and which HD1 (the Linux drive is a SATA drive).
