Not necessarily.
I have a simple calculator, powered by photovoltaic cells.
For simple additions and multiplications, I use it.  It may be
considered as an extra keyboard+display, separate from those of the
computer.

When I need more complicated calculations or copy&paste, I have been
using:
- Python in a shell
- bc (for dec <=> hex conversions)
- xcalc
- gnumeric
According to mood and needs.
