I would guess it is related to the lack of proper SATA driver module built into the kernel / included in initramfs. Try Gentoo's LiveDVD :) It would probably be easiest, if possible (really depends on the chipset and you've got Intel), to enable Legacy IDE Emulation for your SATA in the BIOS Setup. That way, it will need an IDE driver instead, and that's much more standard and supported...
