Thanks Tomer and others who responded. I'm (slightly embarrassedly) only looking for a .com domain - should that have any bearing on my choice of registrar? I'll widen the discussion as well - any recommendations for privacy services from a whois perspective? I seem to remember a service called "Domains By Proxy" a while ago but don't know what their reputation / legalities are.
