[ Attending foss.in 2006 this week ] Meeting some of the early people who used to hang out on the list and reading through the wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_India) it sounds like there is some uncertainity about the precise dates and the events that lead to the creating of this list.
I spent a few minutes sifting through the web to come up with more precise data and here's what I found: a) The list started in late 1997 IIRC, KD and I hooked up via: GLUE: Groups of Linux users everywhere http://www.ssc.com:8080/glue [ URL no longer accessible ] We had 10 subscribers in March 1998. http://limestone.uoregon.edu/woven/lugww/IN.html We announced it on comp.os.linux.announce in July 1998. http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/archives/comp.os.linux.announce/volume98/Jul/980715.02.gz b) Places where the list was hosted and administered: 1997-Nov 1999: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Arun Sharma <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Nov 1999 - Apr 2001: aunet.org, linux-india.org (first majordomo, then mailman) - Thaths ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Apr 2001 - now: sourceforge.net (thaths, raju, devdas bhagat and anyone else I may have missed - please correct me) grandteton.cs.uiuc.edu: My desktop machine in the university (A 200 MHz PPro). Once I graduated from school and moved out, it was given to other students, but they continued to let me have access so I could administer the lists. It was hosted in thath's bedroom for the next two years before moving to SF. -Arun ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys. Earn Cash.
