Well, X windows has this little confusion that what runs on the client
is actually the server and what the server actually does is to run
clients. :-)

So, you have to run the X server on the client, and the display manager on
the server. Run xdm/kdm/gdm (whichever you prefer) on the server, and fire
X from the client as X -query <server machine name/ip address>. This will
start the display manager of the server machine on the client machine,
then login as usual.
