Any metrics (even ball park) on how much performance improvement I'd get if
I recompiled ALL the installed packaged on my machine for my processor
(say, i686)?

I believe there are a couple of hoops I'd have to jump through to get this
just right.  Something about recompiling glibc and gcc a few times.
