Some answers to u'r questions.

For  i740 card, you have to download a driver ( Server ) form the net. This
does not include the source code, but only the binaries ( Because Intel does
not agree on giving the Source code free. )
U can search the net for this. It is available in rpm format. It's named
something like XBF-i740-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm

I had the same problem. Actually, the boot sector of the partition (boot
partition) must be within 1024 th cylinder, only then the lilo can be use
[correct me if I am wrong] . So create a small boot partition at the
beginning of the HDD. That's it . Lilo should be fine then. This problem
normally occurs for big HDD ( eg 16.8 GB )

Check the write protect tab. The main culprit.
