HI,
Before you start installing the modem collect the following information.
1. Modem init string. This you can obtain from modem *.ini file provided for
windows.
2. Find out the kind of dialing, pulse or tone.
3. type of authentication (PAP or CHAP).
4. The serial port to which modem is connected(COM1, COM2, ..)
and of course the phone number.
I assume you have configured X windows. Fire up "control-panel" program from
a xterm.
select modem configuration. Here you need to specify the serial port to
which the modem
is connected.
Now select network configuraion and press add button. It will give you a
list of options.
Select PPP from the list and say OK. Now specify phone number and PAP
details
like PAP user name and password .
In the same menu you will see "customize" button. When you press it you will
be presented
with different configuration sections.
The defaults in hardware sections will work fine. Select Communication
section. Give the modem
Init string there in the entry given. Then Specify either ATDT (if you use
tone dial) or ATDP (if
you use pulse dial).
Also go to Networking section and select ppp up at boot time if you want.
Now Say Yes. Come out of Control-panel saving the configuration.
Goto directory /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/. Run ./ifup ifcfg-ppp0.
Now it should dial and connect to net.
To check whether you are connected run "ifconfig -au". You will see ppp0
listed if
you are connected. Hope this will help.
Cheers
-Shashidhar
