don't bomb me, but check out http://members.xoom.com/DigitelNet
(its where I have loaded all my help pages and scripts).
download the dialin configurator script (dialin-conf-1.tgz)
use tar -zxvf to extract it, run it and see what happens.

well from win98, u don't choose to open terminal window, since
my setup configures linux for pap authentication, which will let
win98/95/nt pass the username<>password pair from the post
dial dialog to authenticate at the linux server.

to check this config, you can after configuring, directly interface
a local win95/98 machine with a straight modem cable ( the cable
which comes with modems to connect to the wall socket) this way

line of modem 1 <==============> line of modem 2

config windows to dial any no(even simple 0 will do), and issue the
command "kill -USR1 `cat /var/run/mgetty.pid.ttyS1`" at the
linux console. If all is well, your Win98 should be connected
and authenticated in a few moments.
Make sure you remove any peer connection before u try this gizmo.

if (any doubts about connection){
    refer to /usr/doc/mgetty*/faxasscanner ( something like that);
    }
