RHL 6.1 has the identd service enabled by default. A reverse DNS look
up is performed when a host tries to access a service provided by the
Linux server like telnet/FTP/POP3 etc.

It first looks in the /etc/hosts table for the mappings and then the
DNS server. This will cause a delay since there are no entries for the
hosts in either the hosts table or the DNS finally timing out.

Solutions -

a) Add entries for all the hosts in /etc/hosts
b) Maintain a DNS server
c) Stop the identd from /etc/inetd.conf

ROSS: I don't know what I'm gonna do. What am I gonna do? I mean,
this,
this is like a complete nightmare!
CHANDLER: Oh, I know, this must be so hard. "Oh no, two women love me!
They're both gorgeous and sexy! My wallet's too small for my fifties,
and my diamond shoes are too tight!"
