type the command "export [filename].jpg". The mouse pointer
changes shape. Select the region of the screen you want to snapshot by
click-drag. Once you release the mouse, a file of the filename you gave is
generated.
Use any image viewer to view it. This assumes you have Imagemagick
libraries installed(by default in most systems).
If you wish to get the entire screen dumped then you may also take
a look at xwd.
