Can you be a little more specific ? LILO has severe space
constraints, which limits the things it can do at startup.

Are you sure this is coming from LILO and not the kernel ?

Unwanted personal opinion:
I think the LILO booting model is broken. If you want to spend some time
fixing it, take a look at how FreeBSD boots the kernel.
