Hi
Even I have tried Xfree86 4.0 on my corel partition (as I didn't want to mess
with my main redhat partition). I have S3 Virge DX card. It is among the few
cards it supports to a good extent. Even here I find that if I try switching
mode using CtrlAlt+/- or go to a text console and try comeing back the system
locks up I have to telnet from another machine and kill X before I can use my
system.

Thus I don't see anything wrong with what Redhat as said. Or for that matter
even Debian I don't think will have XFree86 4.0 as the main X server for 2.2.
They may provide a deb package withit at the most.
P.S: your stating running XFree86 4.0 in bracket actualy prompted me to reply
but if I have misinterpreted you I would like to request you to pardon me.
