I am ~not~ a guru, but here are my two cents -

Nikhil is right.  However, a hosts file should anyway have the 192.168. ip
block of your local lan, or if it is external, the lan should have NAT
properly enabled and the server's public ip should (preferably) have valid
rDNS.  This helps a ~lot~ in minimizing lookup time.
