If you're running X with 32 bpp and 1280x1024 resolution, you use
4 bytes * 1280 * 1024. The rest will be unused.

They'll be used, only if you run 3D applications, which use the
graphics hardware for rendering 3D images. Linux doesn't have too
many apps which do this. To understand what's going on, search the
web for "DRI" and "OpenGL" and read the AGP documentation on
developer.intel.com
