Hi,
Is this statement right : If I have lilo in boot sector of hda2 and I
have made hda1 (say win98 is there in hda1) as active partition, then my
lilo prompt won't be displayed at boot time and I will get win98 directly.
Then, if I make hda2 active I'll get lilo while booting and I will be able
to go to win98 (in hda1) from lilo prompt if I want.

Yes my dear friend,
This is exactly what I've done on my system, cause' another
program sits on the MBR to make my sick little grandpa of a BIOS get to
know I have a HDD larger than 1GB. Having a setup like this also prevents
possible problems with LILO that U may face when U have a dual boot system
with 'DOZE and (naturally) U need to reinstall it (which U've to anyway
what with so many hundreds of programs out there - all of which write
liberally to the registry (yes, there are ways out of these, but none that
are 100% effective AFAIK)). In this case the MBR (and u'r LILO) will be
overwritten and U have to use a bootdisk to restore it...
Another interesting possibility that arises here is that of having 2 boot
loaders (don't see any advantages though, except for the fact that the
nice little third party boot loader can be used for loading the os's while
LILO can be used for passing boot parameters to the Linux kernel... ), one
in the MBR and one in the boot sector of u'r partition. I have tried this
with LILO in the boot sector and a third party bootloader in the MBR.
Worked pretty well - wonder if it's possible to have LILO both in the boot
sector and in the MBR!!!
Also this is a feature that is unique to LILO. I have looked all over the
'net trying to find a bootloader that resides in the boot sector (of say
the 'DOZE partition) - 'vent found any yet. Any pointers there??? This is
to use the third party boot loader for booting as LILO is totally text
based whearas the others present a *NICE* menu to U from which U can
choose by simply typing the number on the list!!!
Hope it was of some use ...
Bye ... Narain.
