Even I face some peculiar problem (I don't know if it is the kernel, but
started after I changed to 2.3.99-pre3). The permissions of /dev/audio,
/dev/dsp and /dev/mixer used to suddenly (unexpectedly) change and then
all my mp3-programs would crib about permissions and exit. Then, either I
changed the permission again ... or then started running my audio-apps as
root. any clues?

thanx.
