some *winmodems* does work in Linux. My compaq presario 1685 laptop have got
a winmodem (lucent 56k winmodem) and it works fine after installing kernel
module for the lucent modem(I got it from some links in www.linmodem.org).
Also I was surprised to see that the kernel 2.2.14 which came with Mandrake
Linux 7 does support DVD ROM file system. I didn't mess with the region
coded DVD movies and all those DeCSS thing.. hindi DVD's (which can be
played in all regions) just works fine.. still the sound doesn't work
properly in nist (the DVD player in Linux). Has anyone tried DVD movies in
Linux with sound?
