Quake 3 requires hardware accelerated OpenGL in order to function
properly. Having a Matrox G 400 however, you are in luck, because you can
download the drivers for the card from the utah-glx site
(utah-glx.sourceforge.net). Please note that it is *far* better to
download the cvs version as opposed to the binary version available for
download, because drivers for the mga tend to be in a continous state of
development, and you are more likely to get better mileage from the latest
drivers. Also, download the latest (3.2) version of the Mesa OpenGL
graphics library (mesa3d.org), of which the beta has been recently
released, or through cvs, which is the better method. The installation
instructions are very plainly given in the glx distribution, and you
should be able to get Q3 up and running. Also, try to get the agp module
for your card and compile it into the kerne (if you are using 2.2.x
versions - the 2.3.x versions of the kernel already have this module), for
the added performance boost.

                                                                yours,
                                                                venu
