I'm using MH at my office right now - and its syntax is incredibly arcane
(runs emacs a close second, perhaps).  However it has incredibly powerful
filtering.  MH and its neat X based frontend (exmh) are both available in
the stock RH 6.1 distro (and the PCQ cd).

If you want to just fetch mails to your box from a pop server, use
fetchmail.  Easy and simple.
