If I recall correctly, my old Linux (RH 5.2) had the same problem
on my sound card; I had to give the "-a" option to playmidi.
The current version does not even seem to have a "-a" option, so
I'm not sure what's going on (I'm not at home right now so can't
check).
Anyway try "-a"; it cant hurt!
