Fixed it.
I went to Donald Beckers pages and found a diagnostic/register setting
program for my Ethernet card. Used it to set the card into 100baseTx,
full-duplex mode and now file transfers are zipping. I feel that a
similar solution will work for anyone who's facing problems with a
switch, irrespective of what the card is, since switches don't seem to
auto-negotiate well, as Gaurav pointed out.
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
is the page for my Realtek card.
Thanks to all who spent time trying to figure out the problem.
