Disclaimer: I've Never used a tape drive on a Linux machine.
>From what I know of tape drives, they don't have a partitions (formatted or
otherwise) on them. Tapes are "linear" storage devices. Typically, you
invoke tar (1) such that it stores the tarred archive on the tape device.
You don't mount a tape drive.
