Your query is very ambiguous and confusing. Sometimes you say they
connect and sometimes they do not and everytime you have said that
there is a linux box in between. Can you be a bit more clear ?
BTW squid can only be used as a http or ftp proxy and the chat applets
of yahoo are any other site will not work thro a http proxy. You need
to have a socks proxy for that like someone was mentioning the other
day.
