I thought that I shall share my experience of installing SuSE6.3 (CHIP
APR CD). I was having a system PII 266, 64MB RAM, 4.3 HDD, CLxx65 card
and Samtron5Ei. I had hda1 c: and hda5 d: drives of win98. hda7 / , hda6
/boot/ and hda8 swap. I purchased a HDD of 8.4GB and made two partitions
first 3gb as ext e:drive and another 2gb as linux partition. first one
with dos fdisk and second with linux fdisk. Now I started installing
SuSE6.3.
First problem. after selection of language, kb and time zone with next
screen started hanging. However in support db, earlier I have read text
installation is possible by pressing ctrl+A while it shows boot (with in
3 secs). I tried that. Now I could continue install.
Now comes the second problem.
I tried to install in linux partition of 2nd HDD. Though I had 2gb and
minimum install requires much less, I got msg saying the space is not
sufficient. Then I tried to install on dos partition. Now it went ok
further until X came.
Now comes the third problem.
I have intellimouse in serial. But it was recognized as PS/2. Hence SAX
or XF86Setup was not of use. First i configured mouse using yast and X
with xf86config.
Now I booted to rh and made a dirs. for /suseroot and /suseboot and
mounted them. my RH lilo.conf is as follows.
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
password=xxxxxxx # password is masked. use your own
prompt
timeout=50
default=win
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20
label=rh
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.12-20.img
read-only
root=/dev/hda7
image=/suseboot/vmlinuz.suse
label=suse
# initrd=/suseboot/initrd-2.2.13.img
read-only
root=/dev/hdb7
other=/dev/hda1
label=win
and did /sbin/lilo -v.
Now I can boot to win98, rh and suse from lilo.
