In windows, the scanner software takes a longer time to initiate the
scanner. Sane (or is it the USB driver?) does does the same in a
jiffy. The actual scanning is slightly faster under linux. But
overall, if u take the entire initialing and scanning phase, Linux is
the undisputed champ.
Another point - in case your scanner goes to sleep (power saving
mode), windows might freeze while waking up the scanner, Linux has no
such problems. For the older kernels, i had to switch the scanner off
and on to wake it up, since 2.3.45+ the problem has been corrected.
