Subject: [LIH] How to install tars
./configure
make
make install
[SureshR] So far so good :)
I do all these. But I don't know if an installation was successful or not.
If successful, how to start these programs ? If unsuccessful, will
[SureshR] $ which program-name will give you the directory the program has
been installed in. Usually (if it is something like /usr/bin or
/usr/local/bin) it is already in your path and you just have to type $
program_name and press enter :)
deleting the newly created directory undo all the changes that were brought
about by running tar, configure, make and make install ? If not, how to
[SureshR] Yeah. However, if the proggy has installed files in three or four
directories, you have to delete all those files. Use which (and whereis) to
find out.
undo these changes. And if I find the program unsatisfactory, how do I
uninstall it ? And lastly, how to upgrade a program. Is the procedure as
simple as it is with RPMs.
[SureshR] Download a diff file and patch it in (man patch). Or download the
new version tarball and install it on top of the older version. With an
rpm, you can track all this. Tough with tarballs. Binand has a nice middle
path - he compiles his programs using a tarball, builds an rpm out of the
binaries and installs the rpm version. So, he has all the control offered
by tarballs, and the ease of maintenance of using rpms.
