Hello,

  Probably your boot floppy has gone bad.  Create a
new boot disk using mkbootdsk to create new one. 
  It is always advisable not to use root account
because the root has complete access to all the sytem
files and configuration files whereas all other users
have read access only.  As a result, unless and untill
you are very sure of what you are doing, it is better
not to use root account.  

  Another interesting reason is that the chances of
virus infection from internet are more if you have
logged in as root(since the root has full access to
all the file systems).
