The way LI* handles non-subscriber posts has changed. Majordomo2 now sends
a reply back to the sender when it sees that a non-subscriber is trying to
post to the list. It also forwards it to the -owner for approval /
rejection. The note sent to the sender says "You are not subscribed to
blah blah blah. The owner will either approve or reject your message etc.
If you are getting this message by mistake then here is info that will help
you debug it. etc."
I decided to start doing this because many people in this list have started
Cc-ing the vger.rutgers.edu linux mailing lists on their posts. And when
the people subscribed to the vger mailing lists replied-all, their
legitimate posts were being rejected. Andrei Hendrick, the author of IDE
in the kernel wrote to me and said that such arbitraty rejection was not
exactly in the spirit of the open source community.
We originally decided to restrict the list to subscribers because there was
no easy way of sending non-subscriber posts to the admin for approval. We
want the list to be closed from spammers not from legitimate posts.
I've rambled on. Coming back to your point about the null sender
envelope. I think nick should fix it.
