Hi Krishna,

Did you set up the symlink properly?

For RedHat this should be
ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA /usr/bin/X11/X

For SuSE this is
ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA /var/X11R6/bin/X

(XF86_SVGA for the latest Xserver XFCom_i810 for an older version)

This is because XDM (or GDM or KDM or whatever) uses X to start up the
display. startx is usually a frontend to xinit which sometimes (but not
always) calls X. xinit reads .xinitrc in the home directory at startup. So
startx is probably working because .xinitrc is OK but the symbolic link
for X is not. Probably that is why the VGA server is starting up instead
of SVGA.

Best wishes,
Indraneel
