This is one of the reasons why some people claim FreeBSD is "better" (sic)
than Linux. ext2fs trades off safety for performance. Part of the reason
is that it's written by folks who live in countries where power outage is
a rare thing. I'd say, wait till reiserfs or ext3 makes it to your
favorite distribution.
