I don't have an answer that might be helpful to you.  But I'd like to take
this moment to say that your post was extremely well written.  Other people
who are new to Linux could learn how to write a nice question from you.

1. You've introduced yourself.  that is nice.
2. You've give us a wealth of information on your computer's set up.
3. You've shown that you've done enough homework before posting to the
list.

All of these are excellent things to do before asking questions.

Look at the OSS config file to see what resources are used by the sound
card.

I've never had good luck with PNP cards.  Easiest thing to do - buy a PCI
modem.  Or better still, buy an external modem.  More difficult -
experiment with various IRQs manually.  Forget PNP.
