I have seen this behavior with RH6.1. All of a sudden, for seemingly no
reason, pop3 would stop working. Attempts to telnet to port 110 would
fail. Inetd keeps running fine, and telnet/ftp works. I am 100% (well
almost) sure, the machine is not broken into, and inetd.conf indicates
that pop3 is enabled.

If I just do a killall -HUP inetd, suddenly pop3 begins working fine. I
have tried figuring the reason but am stuck. Btw this happens very rarely
- during the last 6-8 months, this has happened only twice.

And yes the m/c is not low on memory or anything - it has 128MB RAM and
256MB swap. swap usage is almost none (2-4 MB). The machine is a
P-III@500MHz, and has been up for about 3 weeks.

kedar.
