I have a 24-pin wire dot matrix printer attached to my Linux box.
Eeverything seems to be OK with the printtool and I am able to print
both text and PS files. The standard method for printing a DVI file
through such a printer is to convert it to postscript through dvips and
then print via GS with a -sDEVICE=epson flag. That works fine, but the
output remains very coarse even at the highest resolution. BTW, we have
lot of dos or window based TeX/LaTeX programs (e.g. emtex, vtex etc.)
which create printer file suitable for dot-marix printers from the DVI
file itself through an appropriate driver, which produces very high
quality (even on 9-pin printers) output like the MS program Word-97.
They do not convert the DVI file to PS and then convert the PS file to
dot-matrix file, like it is done in Linux, which results a low quality
output.
Is there anything like that in Linux, so that I can create a dot-matrix
printer file using some driver, direct from the DVI file, not through a
postscript filter? Any suggestion would be a great releif!
