No need to play around with httpd.conf. The standard reason for httpd to
fail to start is failure to resolv the name of local machine. Just add the
entries for the local machine name - you would probably have it different
than localhost.localdomain, which probably is the only thing listed in the
/etc/hosts - to your /etc/hosts file. And then try restarting httpd, if
you have correctly entered everything in hosts, it *should* start up in
sane mode.
