Read on slashdot about /sbin/service which can shortcut the problem of
service controlling on redhat linux systems. however looking at the
script i found that it calls the services with the service name is the
first argument. had to get the arguments shifted before it worked. i
belive my system is pretty conventional but could anyone verify this.

#!/bin/bash

if [ -z "$1" ]; then
 echo "no service specified" >&2
 exit 1
elif [ -x "/etc/rc.d/init.d/$1" ]; then
        temp=$1  <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<  changed
        shift          <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< by me
 "/etc/rc.d/init.d/$temp" $*
else
 echo "$1: unrecognized service" >&2
 exit 1
fi
