There is no simple and fool proof way.  In fact, this was one of the
reasons why package management software like rpm and dpkg were created.  If
you still have the source code of the software that you installed from tgz
files lying around, look into the Makefile to see if it has an uninstall
target.

In the future, install each individual software under
/usr/local/software_name and use something like stow (search freshmeat.net
for URL) to create symlinks from
/usr/local/software_name/{man,bin,lib,sbin} to
/usr/local/{man,bin,lib,sbin}.

But none of the above solves your problem.  You can start creating some
space temporarily by removing / trimming old log files under /var/log.
