is the harddisk partitioned and formatted? Assuming that it has been done, the new
device will be called hdb (b - second hdd, c if 3rd) and the partitions on it would be
hdb1 hdb2 hdb3 so on and so forth. anyway do fdisk /dev/hdb
u should be able to check for sure what are the partions available on it. u may also
create partitions if required. Thereafter just add the partitions to /etc/fstab and
these partitions would be mounted automatically the next time u boot up. But if you
want to use the new hard disk straightaway simply mount the partitions
using the mount command.
mount -t ext2 /dev/hdb1 /newhddpart1
if the partition is a FAT partition use vfat instead of ext2. and newhddpart1 is
obviously a hypothetical name. Just create a directory of your choice and mount the
partition to that directory.
So I guess you can do all this while the system is up and running :)
