try Compiling the Kernel using the following options
in xconfig or menuconfig
in Processor type and Options for symetric Multiprocessing Support
select yes
after compiling the Kernel boot with the New kernel
confirm using the command uname -v the kernel version should have
"smp" appended after kernel version
