Hi,
Here's some info before buying a modem.
To begin with, in all but the rarest of cases internal modems nowadays are
on PCI cards rather than the
older ISA standard --this is where the probs begin. Almost all internal PCI
modems will fail to work,(except those for which OSS drivers have been
written,
which is rare.) though it is hardly Linux's fault.
If you decide to install a diff o/s, each time you've got to check if
proper drivers are available for the distro.
A Winmodem isn't a full fleged modem. To save money, manufacturers rely on
windows drivers to perform most of the calculations needed by the
modem.Therefore, Winmodems will work under windows,but driver's don't exist
for other o/s.
(Compounded by the fact that , specs of some arn't even released.) These
modems also end up chewing valuable processor cycles during operation. In
contrast all external modems, that are
connected via a serial port will work with any o/s you care to try.
(Beos others etc.. ).
But internal ISA modems, work fine with Linux, though difficult to obtain.
Bye
