Hi there,

I am a new user of linux and have just joined the
list. I installed Linux a few days back but I have
been having problems since then.

1. Windows is using Ms-Dos compatibility mode to
access the Linux partition and is recognising it as a
CD ROM drive. Windows is very slow to bootup now. It
takes about 15 minutes but after that it is fine. I
can even run Photoshop.

2. I am not able to create a new user using "useradd"
I get an error saying "useradd: unable to lock
password file". I can't even change my root password
so I can login only as Root.

3. The X windows system is not working properly even
though I configured it during install. The error
message includes a line saying "Exec: /root/.xclients:
cannot execute: permission denied waiting for x
server to shutdown". My Graphic card is a S3 Trio
32/64 PCI 1MB and the monitor is a Compaq 140.

My configuration is:

Pentium 133MHZ
32MB RAM
1.7 GB IBM IDE Hard Disc
C:\ is 813 MB
Swap space is 64 MB
Root is 60 MB
Boot is 15 MB
Usr is 670 MB
Ess 688 Audiodrive Soundcard
Symbios Logic SYM 53c416 (for HP scanners)

I have not installed LILO and I am booting off a
floppy.

I am a complete stranger to linux and any help will be
appreciated by me.

Susheel
