Hi all

This is not related to Linux but still I feel it is important
enough to share this experience. The VSNL Lucknow server was
unoperational for the last 3 days or so. It has started working
today. When I tried to log in today I was denied access while a
friend of mine could connect easily. My password is really good.
Only I know it, is unpronounceable, has capital and small letters
as well as digits and is 9 characters long. I also change my
password every week or so or whenever I let a friend use it for
some time. After several tries I tried the password that I had
used _before_ this one and was able to log in. It seems to me
that the passwd file on the vsnl server got corrupted somehow as
well as any backup copy they may have had of it. As a last resort
they replaced the passwd file with an older backup of the same.
Since my friend has not changed his password since a long time
his password was not affected but my was.

I would like someone more experienced to tell whether I have got
the picture right or not? Could it have happened they way I see
it? What is shadow password?

thanks

Govind
