[LIH] cylinders!!

hi'
 i hav heard a lot many times that linux doesnt go beyond 1024 cylinders
but how do u know wether how many cylinders u can restrict ur hardrive
to or how to restrict it itself ..i think it cud be done by specifying
it in the cmos setup in the bios but am unsure pls clarify.....
