For configuring the X-server you might kill your present  X-server by
Ctrl+Alt+Bk Space try xconfigurator (it's good at autodetecting...).

You could install W~~s, in vmware(came with PCQRH6.1), in your linux box.
Wine is good at running apps that have been written using
Win 32 API, but those using MFC you will have to let go.
(You'll find the list of all apps supported by wine at their site)
