Because of the way the computer's BIOS was designed in the past, the boot
sector should be withing the first 1024 cylinders of the disk.  This means
that /boot should be  a partition in the beginning of the disk.  Since you
already have windows there, this is most probably not possible.  Easiest
thing to do if you don't want to loose all the date in Windos is to buy and
install a boot manager like System Commander.  System Commander will
install a bit of itself in the MBR and the rest of itself in the WinDOS
partition.

You can configure System Commander to give you the choice of booting into
windos or linux.
