hello I have been struggling for the last one month to get the X-windows running properly. I have Trident 3D blade card and Samsung samtron 55E monitor.Though the X-windows runs sometimes but there is a 60% chance that the system goes into a blackout hang(is this called "locking of the system"????). ctrl+alt+Backspace doesn't work .infact nothing works once there is a hang and i have to switch off the power which can cause damage to the system. I read the README.trident file in the linux docs .the following seems to be my problem : While developing the Trident driver, an interesting and perturbing hardware phenomenon was discovered. When using the default board jumper configura- tion, dot-clocks above 57Mhz would frequently lock up the machine. There appear to be jumpers on all of the Trident boards that determine whether the board will operate in zero-wait-state mode on the ISA bus. Disabling the zero-wait-state mode via jumpers cured the lockups, but at the expense of performance. Whether or not a given system will experience this problem is likely a combination of (a) bus speed, (b) video memory speed, and (c) dot clock speed. So be prepared for this phenomenon to occur, and have the board documentation handy. NOTE: VLBus cards are also subject to the above. By specifying the Clocks in the XF86Config file, these lockups are overcome. But it may be worth checking wait states etc. on the card and in the BIOS setup. i could not make out what is zero-wait-state mode and how to disable it??? please help me. though Trident is listed in the detectable video cards list and it is detected at the time of configuration but still the X-window system is failing drastically. please help.......
