I have not tried it.  But I don't think it is going to be possible to use
the Winmodem from inside VMWare.  You see, VMWare gets access to various
"peripherals" / add on cards through the Linux drivers.  A network card,
say, ne2000 based card, is abstracted in VMWare as an AMD Lance 32 card. 
VMWare cannot use the winmodem because the underlying linux layer which it
used to actually talk to peripherals does not recogonize the winmodem.

If you succeed in getting the winmodem to work, let me know.  I am
interested.
