Are you by any chance trying to run kde from
a command prompt that is the console terminal ?
kde is basically a window manager !! it is not
a Xserver , all wm's need Xserver to run. So if you
want to start kde by command line you hv to first
switch in X mode. try xinit ; then u will get an
xterm in the raw X mode... from this terminal fire
startkde.
