Hi to all you Linux Gurus out there.
A newbie needs your esteemed help in configuring his internal modem. I have a
dual bootLinux(RHL 6.2 + Windoze 98 SE) and I am forced to use 'doze only
because of internet surfing and mail management.
I have an internal Creative V.90 PCI 56 kbps Modem which I am trying to
configure in Linux for about 6 months with no luck but yesterday I tweaked with
my system's BIOS and disabled "PNP OS Installed" and you know what my modem(if
it really was) responded to query string.

I used KDE's KPP Configuration and
/dev/modem,
/dev/cua2,
/dev/cua3,    gave these errors=>
Lookin for Modem...,
Sorry, Modem Busy.

Then I tried
/dev/ttyS0
and a window appeared saying=>

"Looking for Modem, Modem Ready."

Then it Checked for ATI Commands and after that opened the MODEM QUERY RESULTS
Window which said,
ATI      ATI
ATI1    ATI1
ATI2    ATI2
ATI3    ATI3
ATI4    ATI4
ATI5    ATI5
ATI6    ATI6
ATI7    ATI7
(Guys, Is it really OK to get this result if yes then what to do next?)
Other settings were=>
Flow Control XON/XOFF & NONE(Both worked perfectly) but using CRTSCTS gave the
"Sorry, Modem Does'nt Respond" error. So I continued using XON/XOFF.

Line Termination CR/LF

Connection Speed 9600 to 57600 all worked perfectly.

Everything fine here till now but when I ask it to "CONNECT" it shows the
"Initializing Modem" Window but actually never dials through the Modem. The
Modem Buzzer never beeped.I even
got a phone call when I was dialling :-)) through KPPP.

The "moreinfo" tab in Windoze MODEM Properties opens a window stating,
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Port                        COM4
Interrupt                12
Address                 2E8
UART                    NS 16550AN
Highest Speed        115K Baud

COMMAND        RESPONSE
ATI1                        000
ATI2                        RXF2-V90A
ATI3                        V4.43.012-T-PI
ATI4                        DSI D-F-V V.90 DI3635
ATI5                        OK
ATI6                        DS1820/DS1821
ATI7                        OK
AT+FCLASS=?        0,1,2,8
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now you guys help me here PUHLEEEZ because if my Modem works I will make my
system totally Dedicated to Linux and delete my 'doze partetion.

Please answer my following queries,

#1 Was it really the Modem that responded or I have been fooled by KPPP?

#2 Please tell me why did'nt /dev/modem initialize and why did /dev/ttyS0
responded so well to the Modem Query.
(GENOME does'nt recognise modem either at ttyS1 or ttyS0. Even BeOS 5 PE
Distributed with CHIP May 2000 could not initialize the modem.)

#3 What else can be done to improve this situation? My modem is installed at COM
4 where as Logitech 3-button Mouse at COM 1 and all other ports whether serial
or parallel are all free.

For information sake I am sending you the particulars of my modem as given on
the website.The Modem is NOT BIOS Upgradable(AFAIK) only drivers can be
upgraded.
